BOSTON BRUINS update

Things are starting to look bleak after the B's drop three straight, a home-and-home against Detroit, then a tough home loss against the struggling Toronto Maple Leafs. As if to add insult to the loss, Phil Kessel (the ex-Boston Bruin) was the one who scored two goals, along with Mikhail Grabrovski's two goals, to defeat the slumping B's.

Luckily, the Buffalo Sabres beat the Montreal Canadiens last night so now the Bruins are tied for 1st in the Northeast Division instead of dropping to 2nd place. They are still in 3rd place in the Eastern conference. However, they'll need to improve if they want to stay there. It's clear that the Bruins need a change. I'm not sure Chris Kelly (Center, acquired from Ottawa for the B's second round draft pick next year) will be enough. Kelly was picked up immediately following the game last night. We shall see if he adds anything to the Bruins line-up. I think there's more work to be done on Peter Chiarelli's (Bruins General Manager) behave.

Thoughts on the Game: BOSTON BRUINS - Game 54 vs. Montreal Canadiens (at TD Garden)

Here's my quick thoughts on the game.

First of all, it was an amazing game. It provided a vast amount of entertainment value that I'm sure EVERYONE was pleased with.

I actually attended the previous two Bruins games at the TD Garden. The first against the Dallas Stars was excellent. The next vs. the San Jose Sharks was disappointing. But this game...WOW! I wish I could have been there. It was a great one.

Timmy shaved his stache. He played well with it, but I'm glad to see it go. The clean shaven look is much better on him.

Caron got called up from the P-Bruins (Providence; AHL Bruins affiliate). This was his first game back since December 1st. This was Zach Hamill's second straight game with the B's.

The first goal was scored by Brad Marchand, with stellar passing from Bergeron and Recchi. That's easily the B's top line.

The first period had a good, quick pace that picked up with tension and aggression.

Horton had a tremendous game. Not only did he get a goal (rare as of late), not only did he get five points (1 goal, 4 assists), but his level of physicality was raised greatly. He was checking and whipping his body around, including planting P.K. Subban, pummeling him to the ground and taking his stick. Truly awesome stuff.

There was a slower pace, and clear lack of energy, out of the first intermission.

I love Micheal Ryder's move he made on his first goal to beat Carey Price (Bruins fourth goal). Good pass from Hamill.

I can't believe Timmy got into a fight. Not much of a battle but still fun to see.

I love the big scrum and all the fights. The intensity has certainly returned to this rivalry.

Thoughts on the Game: BOSTON BRUINS - Game 50 vs. Florida Pathers

Thomas was brilliant again, although he gave up one goal. It was a good shot though. He is quite simply the best goalie in the world right now. And I can't be happier about that.

Bergeron's line was definitely the top line of the evening. Bergy needs to log twenty minutes of ice time per game. He is playing at such a high level in every zone of the ice, and in all situations. He is the B's second best player. Marchand gets another goal (1st period wrap-around). He has been a huge surprise all season. He now has thirteen goals on the year. If he continues at this rate he'll be a 20-goal scorer by the end of the season.

Lucic scored the Bruins second goal (his 20th of the season; wow! Looch the goal-scorer.). It was a wicked shot from the left side of the ice, directly off a Krejci face-off. Krejci's line also played well. He had a scare though. I was worried he got hurt on that hit on the boards in the first period. Luckily, he came back and other than a few balancing issues, he played fairly well. That's good to see. I'd like him to get his goals going though.

Kampfer is my favorite player to watch (aside from Bergy and Timmy). He is becoming a very good defenseman in just his first thirty or so games. He will continue to get better. I look forward to watching him more and more. He has been playing well alongside Captain Zdeno Chara.

I like Tomas Vokoun of the Pathers. I wish he'd be on a better team. Every time I see him play, he stands out as a top performer. I'd like him to be on a better team, that would have a chance at the cup-- like the San Jose Sharks.

That's it until after the All-Star break. The B's are 28-15-7 (63 points; 3rd in the East).

THE RISING
by Brian Keene

I'm over halfway through this one and sadly I'm a little disappointed. It's not nearly as enthralling as the last novel of his I read, DARK HALLOW. And in terms of being a novel about zombies (supposedly-I have a skewed definitions of what I consider them to be) I find it only somewhat interesting. I feel like since zombies are something I know a lot about, and since I'm such a huge fan of the genre, I feel like there needs to be something more to impress me with.

In addition to that, the story takes place from the perspective of several different characters simultaneously. I'm sure ultimately they come together in the end, but honestly this is one of the aspects that I least admire about the book thus far.

It is a good book, however. It's well written and has a fairly interesting plot. It just doesn't feel unique or fresh. The zombie genre has been so played out it's really going to take a lot to stand out. I'll just be patient and hope there's a kick-ass ending.

SUPERMAN vs. PREDATOR

SUPERMAN vs. PREDATOR

I know this may sound ridiculous, but it's actually very good. The plot is understandable and makes sense in the world of comics. It's not just Superman fighting a Predator. There's depth to this story, like most of what's written by David Michelinie. I know him from his great run on INVINCIBLE IRON MAN (volume 1) that he accomplished with Bob Layton (who aside from Adi Granov is my favorite artist to have ever worked on the character). Probably the most noted work of Michelinie is AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #300, which is the first full appearance of VENOM, which he is accredited as the co-creator (alongside artist Todd McFarlane) of this villainous Spidey-foe.

In this three issue story, a small group of scientists stumble upon an alien space craft in the jungle that belongs to a Predator. Superman follows Lois Lane to the site to make sure the craft is safe for studying. Upon opening the vessel Superman is infected with a virus that hinders all of his abilities and powers. Superman joins the group as they discover the ship is being used by a morally corrupt, Darwinistic scientist who wants to rid the world of the weak in order to further the progression of the human race. Superman attempts to stop the scientist while the Predator lurks looking to take back what's his, or destroy every shred of its existence.

I felt both central characters were appropriately and unbiasedly written. So if you're a fan of either or both you'll enjoy it. Maleev's art may not be typical for Superman but it doesn't degraded the book. There's equal parts of action, drama, suspense, and gore which I really like.

Overall it's a worthy read if you're looking for an unusual comic to read. It will surprise you!

Good and Bad: Comics Inconsistency

I've recently read an issue of INCREDIBLE HULK (issue #606). It's a fantastic issue with a great story that builds in the "Fall of Hulks" storyline. It also has tremendous art.

After reading it though, I couldn't help but wonder why comics are so temperamental. By that I mean they are wildly inconsistent, being great one issue then miserable the next. I can't figure this out. It mainly has to do with the Marvel comics I read (Hulk, Spider-Man, The Avengers). Why can't there be any consistent quality output.

When Stan Lee created these characters it seemed like they were all amazing. That was the "Golden Age" of Marvel. But now there's so many different storylines and so many different characters that it's hard to keep up with. On top of that, one of the reasons, if not the main one, is the constant fluctuation of creators. Marvel is really bad with this. They are always changing writers and artists. It really gets annoying. I'll get into a series and it seems to be clicking. The story is there and the art is wonderful. Then, the next issue there's a different artist and I am taken aback. I can't understand.

Perhaps it's not the company. Maybe it's the creators themselves. Maybe they get tired of the same characters and want to move on. I doubt that. Many of these writers and artist love these characters and don't grow tired of them easily. Plus, I'm sure they love the consistent work that working on the same series for an extended period of time would provide. Take Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley for example. They worked together on ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN for one hundred and eleven issues. That's the record for the longest continuous run on a mainstream Marvel superhero comic. That beat Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's record. I'm sure that was a pleasure for them to do, and more would do it if they had the chance.

This sporadic upheaval has caused me to grow tired and weary of comics. I still love them and I will probably always read them (I might even be able to write them), but I can't stick with these major titles when they change so much, so often.

My favorite on-going series is THE WALKING DEAD created by Robert Kirkman. He is still the writer going on issue 72. There have been only two different artists. It's consistently pleases me. Now this is a creator-owned series. That means Kirkman owns it and IMAGE publishes and distributes it. That tells me something--Kirkman wants to keep writing it. He loves to do so. He likes the series. He doesn't want it to change so dramatically in terms of whose writing it. I feel more writers and artists would do so, given the chance.

Movie Review: ALICE IN WONDERLAND (2010)

This movie is one of Tim Burton's best. It's great! It far exceeded my expectations. It's a lot of fun and a great movie-going experience. The story is solid and seems to be an acceptable, supposed 59-year old remake (from Disney's 1951 animated film of the same name). It flows surprisingly well, picking up steam as it unfolds. It's not too convoluted in the fantasy realm to the point of irritation. It's relatively easy to follow, unless you are completely unfamiliar with the characters.

And speaking of the characters--they are stupendous. I found them all to be extremely fascinating and entertaining, drawing upon the classic characters and adding to their dynamism. Mia Wasikowska does surprising well as Alice. Johnny Depp's weirdness might not be my sha-bang but if you're a fan you should love his Mad Hatter. The voice acting is truly superb throughout. Michael Sheen (White Rabbit), Alan Rickman (Blue Catepiler), and Stephen Fry (Chesire Cat) all give admirable performances.

The special effects are very good. I love the incorporation of live-action and CGI. It's not unlike AVATAR in that regard. I found it all to be a noble, and ambitious, effort that really seems to pay off, especially with the big climatic end. I was amazed more than a couple of times.

I had thought that I wasn't a big fan of Tim Burton's, but after seeing this movie I realize he's still an extremely talented director that has one of the most unique visions in hollywood. I am a fan. And, along with BEETLEJUICE and ED WOOD, his interpretation of ALICE IN WONDERLAND is among his best pieces of work.

Overall, I enjoyed the movie quite a bit and I'm glad to see Tim Burton making fun and enjoyable movies. I'd be more than happy to see more.

Neighbors

I finished reading DARK HOLLOW. One theme throughout the novel that I found fascinating was the theme of neighbors. The character is not only acquainted with his neighbors but they are his best friends. Nowadays that's truly uncommon. The character points that out on two occasions. He says that no one knows their neighbors anymore. We just pass each other exchanging nodding hellos and other pleasantries; maybe some small talk. But not much more.

Having come to this realization, I felt envious of what he had. I am among the commonplace here. I don't talk to my neighbors. I may nod or say hello when passing by to get to my apartment, but I haven't talked to them much, and I certainly don't know them. I don't necessarily get along with them (they make a bunch of noise upstairs), but I do wish it were different. Maybe in different circumstances it would be different. Maybe it's just how our society is today. That's another debate.

KILLSWITCH ENGAGE news!

KILLSWITCH ENGAGE is my favorite band. Lead singer, Howard Jones, has recently left KSE's current tour due to an undisclosed "personal issue". Instead of canceling their shows, Phil Labonte, lead singer of ALL THAT REMAINS (my Top Five favorite bands), is taking over. They are still offering their fans refunds, but I guarantee not too many people will cash in on that because the shows that they've completed with Labonte have received a positive responses. Personally, I would love to see them with Phil. I would just love to hear one song with him doing lead vocals. There's a video on youtube (link through Killswitch's website, http://www.killswitchengage.com/) of a recent performance in Baltimore, but the audio quality is extremely poor. You can barely hear Phil's vocals. It's still something to see. Both bands, in addition to being the leaders/innovators of the "melodic metalcore" genre in the mid to late 90s, and both being from Massachusetts, are good friends. To me that's AMAZING!

I've never read a book so quickly. I started Sunday and I'm nearly finished. It's so enthralling. It really captures me. It's exciting, suspenseful, and oddly fascinating. The way that makes you say, "Oh my goodness. Did he really say that? Is he really doing that? I have to read more." I've never been able to read a book so easily. I feel like the book flows so effortless for me. Maybe it's the way Keene rights, or maybe it's because I'm so captivated. Either way this is a fantastic horror novel by a very talented and emerging writer (if he's not huge already). I can't wait to finish it.

Movie Review: SHUTTER ISLAND (2010)

First, I must say that I read the novel beforehand. And as much as I don't won't to be one of those people who always say the book was much better, in this instance it's true...but not by much. I would never take anything away from Martin Scorsese. He is an amazingly talented director that has a true vision and always produces a quality film. Such is the case with SHUTTER ISLAND. I just found the novel to be more compelling in certain scenes. As with all novels that are adapted to film, there are certain little details left out that I would have loved to have seen. With that being said, I still enjoyed SHUTTER ISLAND very much. The main thing to understand is watching a movie and reading a book are two completely different experiences. You can't expect to get the same feeling from one or the other.

The presence the film brings is unique. The look of the island when you first see it is very ominous. The film's score contributes its own anxiety throughout. The cast is great. The standout performance for me is Ben Kinsley as Dr. Cawley. You get a sense of dramatic pull from him and his acting. The special effects are ever-present, but all too noticeable. There must have been a lot of shooting on green screen. I'd much more prefer a more practical setting, but I'm sure their location scouting produced very limited results. The film's end is very powerful and emotional. The last scene in the movie really makes the whole experience worthwhile and makes it stand apart from the novel.

Overall, SHUTTER ISLAND isn't Scorsese's best, but if you are a fan of his, it should not be missed. It's very well made and captures the essence of the source material fantastically.

Another great album by one of my favorite bands. At first I wasn't impressed but after listening more and more I realized how emotional and cathartic it is. Truly a great accomplishment.

Movie Review: THE WOLFMAN (2010)

All the problems and dilemmas this movie had endured during it's production, post-production, and release really had me worried about how the movie itself might turn out. After having seen it, I realize that none of it means much as long as what's on screen is made as best it can and made well. Luckily it is. I love it! I found it to have been terrifically well made despite all the reported problems.

The acting is very good. All the actors involved contribute to the quality of the acting, creating believable and likable characters. It's very enjoying to watch talented individuals work on the big screen and build off one another. I wasn't sure Benicio was the best man for the part, but he does an excellent job of playing the legendary character, Lawrence Talbot, and I was left quite impressed. Emily Blunt is breathtaking. She is also an extremely gifted actress. I couldn't be more impressed with her. Anthony Hopkins plays a strange, and refreshing, role for himself. Hugo Weaving brings his A-game. I didn't expect less.

The story itself is quite good as well. I feel it pays homage to the classic Universal Monster and appropriately builds on the mythos, adding a fresh new take that is both interesting and exciting to experience. Walker and Self have done a superb job with this piece of work.

Now to the one aspect of the film that show its flaws, which are easily justified by the influx of problems that transpired in post-production, the editing. It gets choppy and somewhat difficult to follow at times and can pull you away from the drama and mood of the film. However, it can be considered to be a part of the feeling of what the Lawrence Talbot is feeling and going through. If perceived in that light, it works.

I am impressed by director Joe Johston. I feel he did a great job considering what he had to go through. He handled an all-star cast, managed a big-budget, highly anticipated remake, and was able to produce a quality film. CAPTAIN AMERICA is in good hands.

Overall I enjoyed the film with immense delight (the gore is fantastic and brutal; all too appropriate for a beast such as it was), and I truly believe it to be one of the best remakes I've seen. It's great to see the Horror genre get one right.

This is an excellent film that proves how much story and depth can push a movie and truly make it stand out. It has meaning and it shows how far that can drive a film. The filmmakers had something to say instead of just blowing stuff up. That's important when it comes to making a great film. That's what this is.

I'm not a Mel Gibson fan. In fact, since he decided to make his own films and become a self-righteous anti-Semite, I've somewhat loathed him. I miss Riggs. Having said that, Gibson gives a tremendous performance and shows effort to this role and creates a compelling character. I find myself torn, not liking Gibson but thoroughly enjoying his character, Thomas Craven.

The story is very interesting and dramatic, not being over-convoluted, allowing you to follow while not knowing all that there is; keeping you involved. It's depth and pace really flow and allow the movie to build on itself until the very end, and you're left smiling and thinking.

I'm extremely excited about the director, Martin Campbell. I love CASINO ROYALE. He accomplishes a lot with that film, and he matches it here. And it doesn't have such an iconic character to do it with. The film is based on a 1985 British TV mini-series that he directed. The premise is the same, making it that much more inventive for its time.

Overall, I enjoyed watching it and it left me thinking. I've always thought that that is the mark of a truly great film. Campbell has impressed me and I look forward to his future projects, including GREEN LATERN (in pre-production).

I was somewhat disappointed by this film. I love Peter Jackson as a genre director in more of the horror and fantasy/sci-fi world. His drama pieces just don't resonate with me. There's no doubt that he's one of the best directors out there and that he's always capable of producing quality work. I don't particularly like this one. As I've said before, the horror genre needs quality filmmakers pushing the genre. Peter Jackson has proven himself there and I'd like to see him push the genre further ahead into the artistry of what filmmaking truly is.

I admire the vision of THE LOVELY BONES. It's clear that Alice Sebold had a vision and Peter Jackson captured it on screen. The story is fairly interesting, but the ending is extremely deflating. I honestly expected more.

Of course the special effects are amazing. However, I felt they lacked meaning on a practical level. That may underscore the premise for them in the context of the film, but I felt their significance was somewhat dubious. With that said, they are unique and at times aw-inspiring.

The acting is truly topflight. Plenty of great performances. I can honestly say that there's not one that you can look at and say that it could have been better. I really think this is a testament to the direction of Peter Jackson.

Overall, I feel the film works better as a love story than it does at a shot of revenge. It's very dramatic and emotional, but doesn't captivate me in the way I would have liked.

It's not just about taking risks, but taking the right risks that can help you grow. It's very helpful for people that have a problem taking the next step to getting something they may want or need to fill a gap in their life.

It's got some great life experiences from people who have taken big risks in their lives, sometimes when people pressure them not to. I found the story about Frances Oldham Kelsay particularly inspirational. She was the FDA inspector that refused to authorize thalidomide into the market based on her own research, even though she was pressured by the pharmaceutical company to pass it. Later it was determined that the drug leads to birth defects in infants.

You get pretty much what's promised from the trailer. It's a very straight-forward plot. Mediocre acting (other than Paul Bettany=main character). Special Effects are also nothing too spectacular especially after the bar has been risen so high by recent films. It has a fair amount of action and horror/suspense, which I thought was mixed fairly well. However, overall it's not great and should only been seen by those who find the subject content interesting (i.e. Angels, apocalypse, machine guns, shootouts, freaky possessed people who like rare meat).

First thing you should know going into this film is that it's very much a Werner Herzog film. Those whom are familiar with his work (maybe most notably, the recent RESCUE DAWN staring Christian Bale) will have a much better outing with this film. I forgot that during the viewing and I wish I hadn't. I would have enjoyed it more.

However, it's not a bad film. It's heavy with drug usage; too much for my taste. It's hard to watch at times, but that might be the result of Herzog's vision. Nic Cage really does give a quality performance. Herzog does an excellent job of capturing authenticity throughout the entire film, particularly with the characters. I found it entertaining just watching the characters and not really caring about plot.

Unfortunately, that's where this one does not excel. There's not much of a plot. You mainly follow characters around. It's hard to get a real grasp of what you should and shouldn't care about. All that centers around Terence (Nic Cage). You don't know if he's really good or really bad. That's not to say it's a negative thing. Again, Herzog's vision comes into play. Was that his intention or not? Probably so, but whose to say.

It's most difficult to watch Terence's downward spiral as he struggles to maintain the balance and structure of his life while investigating a homicide, his drug addiction, his relationship with his prostitute girlfriend and his recovering father.

There are a couple of scenes in the film that really standout. The main one being the shootout at Terence's drug-dealing, murder-suspect, partner's house. The whole scene is very interesting, even with it's threat of absurdity. The humor throughout the film is done also in an interesting way.

Overall Rating = 6.1/10.0 ( out of 5)

Violent Swans (or How I Pissed Off King Swan)

I just got back from the gym and I open my living room blind to see two very large swans outside, in front of my patio. It was such a surprise, it shocked me a bit. They were eating pieces of white bread and whole animal crackers that had been thrown from the balcony above. I just stood there for a moment watching them eat, mesmerize by their elegance as they made their way through their feast, mowing it down like it was their last meal.

They approached closer to my patio until they were practically at my door. I had made my way out and I was still watching. They began digging through the brush searching for more food. I saw a large dried out leaf next to me. I said to myself, "What the heck. They might go for it." I picked it up and tried to hand it to the larger one that was closest. He, or at least I think it was a he, immediately knew it wasn't food and shunned it away. Then, he began to hiss at me. "A hiss?", I thought. I didn't know swans hissed. Well they do. And these guys weren't messing around. They wanted food.

I decided to watch a while longer as they started eating the very grass itself. Then, when the larger one had his back turned, I reached out. I just wanted to feel those beautiful feathers. But clever this one was. He was on to me. He turned quickly to greet me with another, much louder, hiss. That was enough for me. I wasn't about to get into a fight with King Swan. I acquiesced to his majesty, and took the road less traveled (or in this instance, more traveled. I don't know too many people who have fought swans).

I retreated to my apartment. Once safely inside, I watched for a few moments more. They left shortly thereafter, once they knew their reign was asserted.

Don't mess with swans when they're hungry.

LORDI - The Arockalypse (2006)

Excellent heavy metal, horrorcore. The album is pretty solid all the way through. The top track being “Hardrock Hallelujah” (track 7). Other great songs include: “Bringing Back The Balls To The Rock”, “Who's Your Daddy”, “They Only Come Out At Night”, and my second favorite, and one of my overall favorite Lordi songs, “It Snows In Hell”.

I love Lordi’s appearance. They dress up in the full garb for concerts and are never seen out of it. They take what Slipknot and Mushroomhead gave and make it extreme. Much like Gwar, except not as overly obtrusive.

If you’re a fan of horror films you should check out DARK FLOORS. Lordi is in it. They are the monsters. How cool is that for a rock band. They're so horrifying and grotesque in appearance that they are actually in a horror movie, pretty much playing themselves, sans the whole rock band persona.

Movie Review: G.I. JOE (2009)

I was very entertained by this exciting, action-packed adventure. Despite some horrible casting, I found it to be fun while capturing the true G.I. Joe experience.

Synopsis:
A secret special ops, anti-terrorism task force battles an underground terrorist organization headed by a corrupt arms dealer.

Cinematography/Special Effects:
It’s interesting to see how the cinematography plays out in an effects-heavy action/adventure. I imagine it can get pretty complicated shooting on location and setting up shots knowing it will undergo hours of manipulation in post-production. I think Mitchell Amundsen (director of photography) did a good job while offering some nice views of Paris and Washington, and provides fast-paced and exciting action sequences. I particularly like the Paris chase scene.
Rating = B-

Acting:
Can’t expect much from this cast. Channing Tatum as Duke is one of the worst casting decisions I’ve seen in awhile. His acting goes as far as him standing in front of a mirror. Marlon Wayans has been in some acting heavy roles before (REQUIEM FOR A DREAM) but is mostly comedy relief here. Ray Park does what’s expected of him as Snake Eyes, if not more. Dennis Quaid as General Hawk is just bad and almost laughable at times (Grandpa needs a cane). The standout performance is Sienna Miller as The Baroness/Ana. She exudes a sultry seductiveness, coupled with her shockingly good looks, that makes it difficult to take your eyes off at times. More so as the dark, mysterious Baroness rather than the bright and bubbly Ana.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt turning out to be Cobra Commander really makes me scratch my head.

Direction:
Stephen Sommers won’t win any oscars, but he makes some fun movies. That’s the case here. He certainly can do special effects heavy productions. Don’t know if he had any say in casting. That would definitely be a blemish. In terms of storytelling, creating mood, and pulling an audience in, I would say he passes.

Music/Score/Sound Design:
Quality and effective Alan Silvestri score. Very good sound development and design that meaningfully enhances the visuals.
B+

Script/Story:
Vastly different from the cartoons and comics in terms of characters’ origins. The essence of the original characters as well as thematic elements and atmosphere have been preserved. Not enough back story on Snake Eyes. And I’m not quite sure about how I feel about Baroness flipping and being romantically involved with Duke. Probably could have done without it, but it seems to work well enough.
C+

G.I. Joe is an action-packed, immensely exciting, thrilling adventure with decent special effects and lackluster acting that should otherwise keep you entertained. Probably will be appreciated more by the fans of the cartoons and comics (and kids) than adults looking to be captivated by heartfelt storytelling.

DISTRICT 9
Directed by: Neill Blomkamp
Written by: Neill Blomkamp and Terri Tatchell

This film is easily the top movie of the year. There’s not many words that can describe how good it truly is. Amazing, spectacular, astonishing, and phenomenal just don’t quite seem to do it justice. Movies like these make me realize the power of filmmaking and why I want to be involved.

Just to be safe:

Synopsis:
A psuedo-documentary look back on the presence an alien species that came to earth, and whose ship remains dormant above the city of Johannesburg, South Africa. The story follows Wickers Van Den Merwe (an agent for MNU, a government agency that deals with the aliens) and his recently appointed mission to formerly relocate the population of aliens, or “prawns”, currently living in fenced in slums below their ship to new government built camps in order to supposedly better house them.

Cinematography/Special Effects:
Amazing! The documentary style introductions set a reality-based tone to the film. I was blown away by the authenticity of the vintage film and stock-based footage, that only seemed to add to the feeling of this being an actual event. Once the action gets going, you are immediately sucked in. The suspension of disbelief is never in question. Considering the content and subject matter, that’s quite impression. There are plenty of gorgeous skyline shots of Johannesburg and the ship. The creature animations our some of the best I’ve ever seen. Truly amazing how far technology has advanced. I felt the prawns’ movements and actions were super-realistic. Whoever acted as the motion captures for them deserves an Oscar. There are some wicked cool effects with the alien weaponry. Again, making it seem that if they were real, that’s what it would be like.
Rating: A

Acting:
Surprisingly good despite being an all foreign cast. No overacting, showboating American Super-Action stars here to muddle a great script. Sharlto Copley does a superb job representing the main character, Wickers. His performance is as captivating as any role in a multitude of sci-fi pictures. His relation with the CGI based creatures is blatantly convincing, making me feel that there was an actually person acting out the creatures’ parts on set.
B+

Direction:
Never hearing of Neill Blomkamp, I would have to say that this is a good indicator that this is an extremely talented individual. His ability to present this story as if it were an actual event is unprecedented (perhaps the only thing coming close to THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT). The story is executed to perfection. The acting is spot on. There are huge amounts of special effects that don’t get in the way of the action and only seem to augment the story and performances of everyone and everything involved. And at the end of the day, he wasn’t making a film about aliens. He wasn’t making an action film. He wasn’t showing the execs at Microsoft that he could do a HALO film. He is telling a story. And it’s got a lot of heart and a lot of guts. That takes a talented director to pull all that off.

Music/Score/Sound Design:
Another astonishing feat. Beautiful score that accentuates the brilliant emotion of the film. Good selection of music to set the tone of the action and chaos of the film. Excellent sound design. From the alien weapons to the prawn dialect, there are no shortages of creativity and visionary design.
B+

Script/Story:
Unique. Inventive. Intriguing. Dramatic. Emotional. Sensible. Depth. Artful. There’s a lot that can describe this story. I love stories about aliens. And I love thinking about first contact and how we would relate to unknown life forms. This presents an interesting take. It’s not “we come in peace”. It’s not a “hostile takeover”. It’s about a group of living beings (who have, some how, got here and want to go home) versus the greed of humanity.
A+

This has to be a movie everyone goes and sees. I know I’m presenting a lot of positivity here because I’m such a fan of the Sci-Fi genre, and I‘m very excited to get another masterpiece (right up there with ALIENS and T2). However, it’s really a great film with a lot of excitement, drama and masterful special effects. The story has heart. It makes you think. It makes you feel. It makes you wonder. Those are all signs of a great film and this is certainly that.

Overall Rating = 9.6/10.0

Very good book so far. I can really get into it. It’s got a lot of cool, classic horror elements with a modern twist. The characters are enjoyable to read. There is some very gruesome descriptions of what the monsters are and do. I love it so far. Lee might not be as skilled as Stephen King, but he can write horror. That is clear. And I dig it.

Movie Review: THE COLLECTOR

Originally intended to be a prequel to SAW, writer-director Marcus Dunstan and writer Patrick Melton (SAW IV, V, VI) present an interesting, stylistic horror film that may lack in originality, but succeed in an enjoyable modern-horror film experience.

I thoroughly enjoyed THE COLLECTOR. The premise is rather simple: A man, trying to support his wife/girlfriend and their child, resorts to breaking in a house to steal a valuable gem. However, on the night of the heist, someone else has other plans for the house and its occupants.

Cinematically, this is a beautiful film. Opting for a more stylistic approach proves to be more effective, using filmic imagery and sensual tones to draw the viewer in. You become more comfortable with what’s going on in front of you and less aware of the horror and gore that will inevitably ensue. The sound design adds to the effect and really makes you question what‘s in store. Good job there. The acting is nothing special. Josh Stewart gives an adequate performance in the lead role. While Juan Fernandez‘s performance as the title character works, but could be better. He’s not as physically imposing as Jason Voorhees or Leatherface, but he does come off as very creepy, mysterious, and disturbed individual. I appreciated the fact that he isn’t all powerful. He gets knocked around almost as much as he dishes out torture and pain. His strength lies in his trickery. The character has a weird fascination with insects that is left for the audience to infer. He creates traps much like a spider lays its webs. I found that aspect to be quite interesting. Overall, the characters might not come off as likable as you’d want, but you certainly don’t want to see them die; and not in such painful fashion. Which is the desired affect for any horror movie protagonists.

Beware, this movie does contain booby traps/torture scenes similarly found in SAW, which is easier to understand once you realize its original intent (prequel). But also, any number of which can be forgiven when you come to understand the character’s motive. It’s not clearly given, but you can make some sense of it if you just use your imagination a bit. Besides, they produce some decent gore and make you cringe frequently.

Overall, THE COLLECTOR delivers plenty of horror and gore, but presents it in a very unique and elegant way that has past most, if not all, modern-horror films of its kind by.

KILLSWITCH ENGAGE - Killswitch Engage (2009)

Just released on June 30th, 2009. I’ve been listening to it nonstop. They are my favorite band. If I could only listen to one band for the rest of my life…it would be them.

So far, this sounds like it’s a great release. It’s stacked from the first track to the last. The problem is that’s not much. There’s only 11 total tracks (15 on the special edition- three of which are live songs). The total run time is just over 38 minutes (special edition - 55 minutes). That’s extremely short for an album. However, even with the lack of songs and length, the album certainly makes up with quality.

Top Tracks: “Reckoning”, “Starting Over”, “Light In A Darkened World”

Definitely check it out.

I AM LEGEONED

I’ve been reading the graphic novel adaptation of Richard Matheson’s I AM LEGEND. I love post-apocalyptic stories; or even “the last man on earth” idea. I’m on chapter 6 now. Chapter 5 dealt with Neville fighting to get back in his house after forgetting to set his watch, to watch for sunset. I got excited reading it and the events that lead up to it. Neville running his errands out in town where no one is around.

At the start of Chapter 6, Neville talks about all his work in having to repair his house. It says, “He’d almost enjoyed all the work once it was started. It gave him something to lose himself in, something to pour all the energy of his pulsing fury into. It broke the monotony of his daily tasks;”
This makes me think about why I want ZA (Zombie Apocalypse). I’m sick of living life the way we do; having no real purpose; living only to consume and procreate and continue the never-ending bullshit cycle. I’d rather live like Robert Neville: having a purpose and the will to survive. Doing the things needed to be done in order to survive; striving for a life we all currently take advantage of. Life would be more meaningful and enjoyable.

So—I want ZA to break the monotony of life. Not just day-to-day. But forever. So we can strive to have a better life. A life worth living.

Watch A CLOCKWORK ORANGE

If you want to watch a great movie, you should check it out. It deals with crime, ultra-violence and the corruption of youth. It's a film by Stanley Kubrick, a visionary far ahead of his time.

Personally, I love this film and I forgot how great it is. I recently re-watch it and was amazed by the depth of the story (which was orginally presented in the novel that the film is based off of by Anthony Burgess), cinematography, the multitude of brilliant imagery, and how well the film holds up and the significance of the message even for modern times.

Inner Self (or How I Learned to Love The Zom)

The other day I listened to an audio book by Paul McKenna about positivity and inner happiness/contentment. He’s mainly know as a hypnotist and a TV personality in the United Kingdom. And although, he presents some hypnotic exercises in the audio book, I was more interested in what he had to say about society and culture of the western world in reference to being less happy with ourselves and seeking happiness through exterior sources. He says that too often we seek fulfillment in the outside world. This has caused us to become overly competitive, selfish, and rapidly consume the Earth’s resources without care for the ecological consequences.

He suggests that we need to find more contentment within. Be more comfortable with ourselves, and instead of trying to change what we have or don’t have, we should change our attitudes and our perspective.

“Life is only as amazing as the ideas you have about it.”

This quote got me thinking about my outlook on life. The truth is I’ve had a very negative outlook on life which has caused my quality of life to be diminished simply because of the way I perceived it. Lately, I’ve been trying to have a more positive outlook on life. It really works.

However, that doesn’t mean I should curb my thoughts and creativity. Much of my ideas come from my particularly cynical outlook on life, society, and where we as a species are heading. After thinking about it, I have realize this is why I love ZOMBIES! I love stories about zombies, the end of the world and the apocalypse. I believe the world is a great place. But it has been overrun. Not by zombies, but by our insatiable appetites for consumer goods, products, and consumption of resources such as fuel. I feel zombies represent this. Like they say in George Romero’s films, “They’re us. We’re them and they’re us.” It’s that simple. Therefore, we must destroy all the zombies (all of our cravings for goods to satisfy us). Then, we can learn to do without and find contentment within. This will bring about a massive, worldwide change. Then, we as a species can grow and start anew.

Look at it like this: the zombies have taken over. They are consuming and infecting all the living. The survivors must stop them. They must destroy them. Once they do, they can start to rebuild the world in a better image. We can start over. But first we have to hit the reset button. It’s time for change. Before it’s to late. Before this will truly be a…..Dead World.

Movie Review: PUBLIC ENEMIES

PUBLIC ENEMIES (2009)

I’m not a fan of Michael Mann. Of course I like HEAT. With De Niro and Pacino on the top of their game how could you not. THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS is ok. But it has Daniel Day-Lewis, one of the most talented actors ever to be on the big screen. I don’t care for anything else he’s done. So, having said that, I have to say PUBLIC ENEMIES isn’t that bad. I didn’t expect it to be great, despite having two of the best actors around (Depp and Bale).

The story’s not too dynamic. Depp plays John Dillinger, Public Enemy Number 1: the nation’s most wanted man; to be taken, “dead or dead”. Bale plays Melvin Purvis, assigned by J. Edgar Hoover (played by Billy Crudup - recently off his performance as Dr. Manhattan in WATCHMEN) and his Bureau of Investigations to track down and apprehend Dillinger.

A massive manhunt and gun fights a plenty ensue. Hope you like machine guns and Tommy Guns. You get a bunch of them.

Both Depp and Bale’s performances are solid. Now I’m not a huge fan of Depp’s so I can’t attest to how well he did the job because he always plays such strange roles. And he’s not going to stop (look at his picture as the Mad Hatter in next year’s ALICE IN WONDERLAND remake). However, the Dillinger character is interesting, you’ll enjoy what Depp can bring. Bale, on the other hand, plays a more subdued role. Purvis is a judicious, dutiful special agent that wants to bring Dillinger in at all costs. His performance leaves me wanting to know more about the character. There’s not too much depth shown to Purvis. I believe that is the intended effect. We need to believe that his one and only goal is catching Dillinger. And I do. But I want to dig deeper and its just not here. You will find some interesting actors with some small and minor roles. The best being Stephen Dorff’s portrayal of Homer, one of Dillinger’s men. I found him to be the most entertaining character. Plus, his dialogue and accent feels the most realistic of the lot.

Ok. Now to the epic downfall of the film. The cinematography. This film could have been so much better had the cinematography been better. It incorporates the “shaky” cam technique to a sickening level. Its attempt is realism, and to pull you in. It does the exact opposite. It pushes you out immediately, and takes away the suspension of disbelief. It’s noticeable in a bad way. Not good for the DP (Director of Photography). When you have audiences complaining that its too shaky and it’s making them sick--that’s just bad. I love using hand held cameras. But there is no reason to intentionally shake the camera to the point that you can’t tell what you’re looking at. I don’t care how realistic you want to make it appear. That’s just stupid.

Overall, it’s a little long, and if you’re a fan of either Bale or Depp (and you can get over crap-o-vision) you should definitely watch it. Good characters, simple, interesting plot, and dynamic characters should keep you there for the 137 minutes.

Basically, Frank Darabont (director of some great Stephen King adapts including THE GREEN MILE, THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, and THE MIST, my personal favorite) is trying to make FARENHEIT 451, a classic novel by Ray Bradbury about a dsytopian future. People that have read it (including studio execs and producers) say it's an amazing script and it should be made. However, Darabont can't get anyone to option it. When asked why, they say, "How am I going to get 13-year-olds to show up at the theater." Referring to it being an R-Rated feature, therefore limiting the number of people, limiting the number of ticket sales.

This is Hollywood. This is what we aspiring filmmakers want to be a part of. Someone has a work of art, admittingly so, and cannot get it made because it won't make as much money. This is what it has become. And I AM ASHAMED.

This isn't my review. In fact I've been hesitant to put a review here because--well because I just didn't want to waste my time. I didn't like it. In fact, I found it to be one of the worse movies I've seen of that caliber, big budget blockbusters. Don't get me wrong. It's not horrible, complete, utter crap. And there are things I like about it (the Decepticons' world; special effects; and simply the Transformers). However, for every one thing I like about it, there are a hundred more I detest. I've found the perfect review for it that reflect my views. I agree with it 100%. Hopefully, this will help more people become aware of this epidemic....called Hollywood.

The Downfall of Man

I’ve been thinking lately about our society and how it has been negatively affected by pop culture. I feel like we are getting dumber, less sensitive, more promiscuous, less respectful, less caring, more selfish, and altogether a far worse sense of good character. Its cause has had a noticeable effect on youth. People dress differently, speak differently, and have a far worse attitude about life and how to live it. They no longer care about the common good of man and making the world a better place. Instead, they are more concerned with iPhones and getting laid 24/7.

Personally, I can’t help but feel ashamed. I see it happening right in front of me as it hits me in waves. For every solid, decent person I meet, there is ten, twenty, fifty, even a hundred people that I want nothing to do with.

This realization has caused me to grow distance from our society as it further descends into corruption and moral decay.

More of a Comedy Movie Movie

YEAR ONE is probably the first disappointing movie all year. It plays more like a Wayans’ Brother movie (SCARY MOVIE, DANCE FLICK) than it does a Harold Ramis’ (CADDYSHACK, National Lampoon’s VACATION, ANALYZE THIS) fun comedy. There’s not much laughs to be had unless you’re a big Jack Black fan or you are enamored with Michael Cera’s subtle, dry quips. Personally, I lost a taste for them after seeing the trailer a couple of times. Don’t expect to be blown away by story. Not much here. I’m not a fan of the subject content, nor do I know much of the history behind it.

Unfortunately, THE PROPOSAL is the better movie to come out this week. Pass on YEAR ONE. Ye be warned!

ALL THAT REMAINS - Overcome (2008)

Edgy Heavy metal with a lot of punch. Originally formed in 1998, this Massachusetts band’s third officially released album is another stellar performance following their 2006 release The Fall of Ideals. Overall, Overcome, isn’t quite as good as Fall…, but is not to be missed by fans of the melodically fused hardcore metal genre, much in the style of KILLSWITCH ENGAGE, my favorite band. Plenty of great tracks are present here, making it extremely easy to listen to throughout without skipping tracks. However, none are quite like the second track on the album “Two Weeks”. This has been one of my favorite songs since I first heard it. It remains in my top songs ever. It’s just a gut-wrenching, pulsating, cathartic experience every time I hear it. The words can ring true with people who have experienced loss and a failed relationship. But it’s more than that. And the sound truly kicks ass.

ALL THAT REMAINS has quickly become one of my favorite bands over the last few years when I’ve really latched on to this particular genre. I feel like it’s an appropriate fit for my life right now: moments of anger, aggression, and pain followed by moments of peace, harmony, and enlightenment.

Big News - PREDATORS, IRON MAN 2, ROBOCOP, DEADPOOL

-Robert Rodriguez is producing the new PREDATOR movie (called PREDATORS) through his Troublemakers Studios. As of now they're talking to Neil Marshall to direct it. Neil Marshall is the director behind some of the best genre pics in last five years (DOG SOLDIERS, THE DESCENT, DOOMSDAY). I love him and I hope he is in fact going to direct. He's incredibly talented and would be a perfect fit for the movie. In addition, by getting him, I feel better about the film. I was worried it might be over the top action that Rodriguez is known for. But with Marshall at the helm...let's just say I feel a lot better.

He's playing the villain Whiplash. But the character's name is Ivan Vanko, who from the comics is the Crimson Dynamo (another Russia's version of Shellhead). The pic looks cool and of course I'm super-stoked about the movie.

-Darren Aronofsky, director of REQUIEM FOR A DREAM and most recently THE WRESTLER, is set to reboot ROBOCOP. This is unbelievable. I think he's a tremendously talented director who has vision. If he can bring that to a new ROBOCOP movie...well, let's say it would be "wicked awesome"!!!

-Ryan Reynolds says the new DEADPOOL spin-off will be true to the source material. It will be the Merc with a Mouth and not Weapon XI. So that's excellent news. There's potential for a great movie here. Ryan Reynolds is the perfect Deadpool. It should be good provided it has a good director under it.

First Look - H2: HALLOWEEN 2

I watched the first trailer last night for the first time. It looks amazing. I’m very excited about it. It actually looks better than the first. The feeling and atmosphere it evokes is truly something that is missing in a vast majority of horror films present today. The dark, menacing, hooded Michael Myers stalking his victims in the hospital, looking to finish the job; Mrs. Myers (apparently) guiding him from beyond the grave; more brutality, more gore, more Rob Zombie taking it to the max (I can only hope).

I love the original HALLOWEEN 2 (written by Debra Hill and John Carpenter, The Man, himself and directed by Rick Rosenthal). There’s plenty of people who didn’t like that film and feel it’s a let down, and a dramatic step down from the brilliant original masterpiece. I don’t quite see it that way. It’s a legitimate sequel and I view it as a continuation of the first film. It’s not quite on the level as it, but it’s one of my top horror movies. I can’t get enough of it. This new reincarnation of it, H2, looks fine and I hope it can be just as good.

This is a fantastic soundtrack. I loved hearing it for the first time while watching the movie. It’s actually very good to listen to by itself as a stand alone album. It creates a vibrant atmosphere unique to the Terminator landscape. Overall the album, and entire score, maybe better than Brad Fiedel’s score for the original TERMINATOR and T2, and Marco Beltrami’s TERMINATOR 3 score as a whole. However, it lacks that knockout punch that exists in the previous films' main theme. The main theme, initial created by Brad Fiedel, is one of the best themes ever, and my personal favorite. The T2 interpretation being the best of the three. With that being said, I believe Danny Elfman has done a superb job in re-establishing the franchise with a great score that supplements an outstanding film.

Movie Review: DRAG ME TO HELL

I found DRAG ME TO HELL to be a refreshing entry in the American horror cinema landscape, albeit another PG-13 movie. Here, Raimi gets back to his horror (EVIL DEAD) roots. And that’s where he belongs. The SPIDER-MAN movies are very good. But horror needs a great director leading the industry. Raimi is just the guy. Slapstick and satire aside, he definitely knows how to make horror.

This may not be his best work, but it’s nothing to push aside. There are plenty of thrills and shocking moments. In addition to the many instances of Raimi’s style that harkens back to the EVIL DEAD trilogy, it makes for a very entertaining movie-going experience.

From the opening scene you get a feel and a sense of what the movie is going to be like, introducing you to the demon, Lamia, and what it can do. Then, we see the title. I love how it hits you in the face, popping on screen in huge text. From there we meet the characters and the plots laid out for you. Christine Brown, a loan officer, denies Mrs. Ganush, a very creepy gypsy, a loan on her home. After begging, Mrs. Ganush puts a curse on little Christine. After a bitter battle in a parking garage with gypsy-psycho-lady, Christine is tormented by the Lamia, and subsequently destroyed.

There are some great shocking scenes which provide plenty of gore and icky-ness to make the gorehound within the true horror fan smile. In fact, between that and the comedy in the movie, I found myself smiling quite a bit. Raimi definitely knows how to blend the genres between horror and comedy.

The sound design in the film is fantastic. All the creepy, eerie sounds add to the overall look and feel of the film. Christopher Young’s score is also a shinning example of how to add to the atmosphere with dark underlying tones, and strange foreboding violins streaming along your curiosity, then shattering your senses with large, loud, violent screeches and screams.

Overall, I had a ball watching the movie. I predicted the ending, which I never like, and I did hope for more at certain parts of the movie (I really, really wanted to see the Lamia in its true Monster form), but despite all that it’s a great film and I can’t wait to watch it again.

Aliens vs. Predator Omnibus: Volume 1

Very good stuff. The first AvP story is clearly an inspiration to the first movie. A great deal was pulled directly from the comics. The writer, Randy Stradley, is quite gifted at storytelling. He makes AvP more than just an action/horror comic. He adds a dynamic to writing that is rarely seen in comics. Plus anything with ALIENS and PREDATORs I love.

If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor by Bruce Campbell

The Man himself with his first autobiography. Brucey is one of my favorite actors. Obviously the EVIL DEAD Trilogy is some of my favorite stuff. But his most recent film, MY NAME IS BRUCE, is unbelievably good. I love it.

This book is insanely entertaining. I could read this book even if I hated reading…or even if I hated him (but that's impossible).

Dredg - Catch Without Arms (2005)

There’s something about the music of the California-created band Dredg that affects me. The sounds and melody throughout are rhythmic, hypnotic, and enthralling at the same time. I’ve been listening to them since I discovered them in 2001 at a DEFTONES concert. They were amazing then and they have easily become one of my favorite bands.

Catch Without Arms is an excellent album from top to bottom. The chords resonate a sense of passion and desire within me that makes it difficult to keep away from it. I find it inspirational more than just something to listen to for a good time. If I ever feel down or scatterbrained or am just not feeling in a comfortable state this album, along with their others (Leitmotif and El Cielo), help me rise above my temperamental shades of gray.

From the opening track, Ode To The Sun, you are cast upon in the landscape and atmospheric tones of Dredg. The title track has a clingy rhythmic tune with contemporary proverb-esque words of wisdom for me personally. Sang Real’s beat brings you in, while Hung Over on a Tuesday reveals their true hard rock/metal side that can’t be ignored. My favorite tracks are Planting Seeds and Matroshka (The Ornament) for their insanely encapsulating melodies that truly touch me with its tender emotional effectiveness.

Quite simply the best animated movie of the year and is definitely UP there when you talk about best animated movies ever. Yeah, it’s that good. Should you expect anything less from Pixar whose animated features have absolutely transformed the animation industry? Year after year they have been producing stellar work that both kids and adults can enjoy with great story, depth, characterization, comedy, action and the utmost in entertainment. And UP is no exception.

I’ll be honest, when I first heard about this one I thought it wouldn’t be that good and it really didn’t look interesting. Well, I’ve now learned never to doubt Pixar. This is an outstanding movie. The animation itself is always supreme quality. It’s an excellent blend of comedy, action, adventure, drama and suspense. These movies have it all and it really makes it difficult not to like. There’s something in them for everyone.

One of the most surprising elements in the picture for me was the characterization and the depth of the story. Clearly from the trailer you don’t get much of the story other than the general premise. And that alone is enough to make you curious, but nothing is there for one to really get excited about. From the opening scene to the end credits, this movie will keep your attention. You are immediately pulled into the world that is created on screen; you follow the characters and you get emotionally attached. You can relate with them and you sympathize with them. That’s just good writing and great execution of the script. That’s a trademark of these Pixar movies. That’s why it’s my belief that these are some of the best stuff on the market, and everybody should be looking forward to them year after year.

UP should be on everyone’s list of movies to see.

TERMINATOR SALVATION (2009)

TERMINATOR SALVATION is everything I thought it would be, if not more. It lived up to my expectations, and I set the bar pretty high. I was definitely impressed. Every aspect of the movie seemed to click and flow and create a great film going experience. It’s simple stunning!

This is a rare movie that has an amazing set of trailers for it and the movie itself lived up to those previews not allowing them to reveal too much. And I really appreciate that considering that amount of films that come out and do the exact opposite of that.

The special effects are wonderful. The Terminators look exceptionally well. The CGI is very good and doesn’t seem too contrived. The environment and landscapes look fairly good and add to the rugged look of the film.

There is good acting throughout by the entire cast. Sam Worthington (Marcus Wright) does a particularly good job considering he hasn’t been in much and certainly nothing as big as a Terminator movie. Christian Bale is on par with his other great performances. I’m a huge fan of his and it is like a dream to see him play as the legendary John Connor in this movie. Terminator fans couldn’t ask for more with him. Also, Anton Yelchin’s portrayal of young Kyle Reese is very good and the importance of his character is not something to push aside.

I really like how the main characters' screen time is split while being able to tell a compelling story from both characters' standpoints. Both characters, Wright and John Connor, have an interesting dynamic and when they come together it adds to the sense that they are like brothers, even though they are so different, being two different breeds (one a resistance leader for the human race; the other a new hybrid of Terminator-Synthetic based organism who believes he is actually human but ultimately used as a pawn by the machines).

Seeing the Arnold T-800 is nice. It really brings a presence and attitude that no other single Terminator can do. It looks strikingly like the original Terminator back in 1984. Arnold's face is CG'd onto a built stunt player. The irony being that this Terminator, the one that originally tried to kill his mother then was sent to protect him and becomes much like a father to him, would be the one to FINALLY kill him and eliminate the chances for success for the Resistance.

The action is fantastic throughout and is very much one of the strongest elements of the entire movie. It definitely had me on the edge of my seat wanting more and more and becoming engulfed in the excitement. Rarely does a movie accomplish that.

Overall I can’t say enough positive things about it. I was extremely pleased and I will be watching this movie for many, many years to come. I really can’t wait to see it again.

‘Salem’s Lot by Stephen King

I just finished it. And I have to say, even back in the late 70s, King reigned supreme in his mastery of writing. I don’t think anybody can argue against his ability because clearly he can write extremely well. The suspense and the way he pulls you into certain scene really allow you to experience the terror just as the characters themselves. One of the best instances of this is when Ben Mears, the main character, is describing his first experience with the dreaded, evil Marsten House. Reading this scene and following as the nine year-old boy sneaks into the house on a dare and witnesses an absolutely terrifying image of Hubert Marsten’s hanging dead body open his eyes and look at Ben had my heart racing. I’ve never really experienced that feeling just reading a book. That’s why you can never underestimate the impact of reading.

Overall the book is very enjoyable. Not a whole lot of action, and certain plenty of dialogue, but you shouldn’t struggle following what’s going on. I love how King only reveals what the book is truly about as you read along and experience what and when the characters experience. I believe that is an extremely effective style of writing.

Godsmack - Self-Titled (1998)

This is their best album although their most recent release, IV, will give it a run for its money. Both are great albums. But this one is the one that introduced me to the Boston-based group lead by lead singer Sully Erna. His vocals are unique and produce a tough, edgy quality to the music that make the sound really strike hard. Their first single “Whatever” is still one of the best tracks in addition to “Voodoo”, “Bad Religion”, “Keep Away” and “Stress”. This is an album that I can listen to all the way through and not be inclined to skip a track here and there. I can only say that for very few albums and that’s what makes it one of my favorites.

STAR TREK is the biggest surprise right now. I really didn’t think it was going to be that good, but it was. SUNSHINE CLEANING isn’t really my kind of movie but it’s just one of those films that has an intangible quality to it that really makes me like it. I’m sure it has to do with the excellent direction, action, and storytelling. I LOVE YOU, MAN has Paul Rudd. And what I can I say about Paul Rudd other than he’s probably my favorite comedy actor and I have a man crush on him. WATCHMEN will definitely be on the list at the end of the year; at least in some regard. Good filmmaker adapting a great graphic novel. No real surprise there.

We’ve still got some potentially great ones coming up. I hope none of them make my “Let Down” list. Until then, au revoir! (Has Gambit would say…even though Deadpool could kill him easily.)

DREAMS (Are Not Easy)

I feel that having all this free time is a sign. A sign that I should be using it to work on my skills as a storyteller and filmmaker. That’s what I want to be. So why can’t I work at it and make it happen? A part of me thinks that it’s just going to happen one day. That’s not the case. I have to work at it and fight for it. AND PRACTICE!!!!

So I should be using this time. But it’s hard to when I have a bunch of other stuff on my mind. I feel like I need to get things straight with my life before I dive into my career. Which is the complete opposite of what I was thinking when I was in school. It’s funny how things like that change so drastically. But I guess that’s life.

However, regardless of what’s going on in my life, and all the problems I have, I need to be working on my goals; career and other. Becoming a director is not easy by any means. It takes time. That’s why I need to be using my time to get there. I will try. I have to. It’s my dream. It’s important to have dreams and not give up on them.

Stresses of Everyday Life

It seems that there is always something that’s going on in regular, ordinary life that stresses me out. It’s really quite inexplicable. I can’t understand it. There’s just always something that affects me and gets me worried for seemingly no reason. I constantly worry when I have nothing to worry about. And that makes me stressed. And the more stressed I get the more I worry and the less I concentrate and am able to get things done.

My life right now has no big concerns at all. I don’t have a job but I really don’t need one. I’m okay with money. I just want to pay off my student loan; which is almost done. Then after that I’m going to move to Massachusetts and basically start over, because I don’t like it here and I want to return to my native land. Sounds corny but it’s want I want and how I feel. And I know it’s the right decision for me at this point in my life.

I don’t have any health concerns. My family has a collective good health. At least what I know about. I don’t have anyone else in my life that I really care about.

My sports teams are doing fantastic. The Red Sox are world champions (second time in three years). A great many people have lived their whole lives without seeing the Sox win it all in there entire lives since 1918. I should be truly grateful to have seen it twice in my short life so far. The BC Eagles football team finished one of their best seasons; in which they were at one time ranked number two in the country. And the Eagles basketball team is doing fairly well. I expect them to go deep into the NCAA tournament. The Celtics are having one of their bests seasons ever with the new “Big 3” of Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, and Ray Allen. They are, in most eyes, the favorite to win the NBA finals. The Bruins are probably doing the poorest of the bunch; but even so they aren’t doing that bad at all. They’ll make the playoffs. I’m sure. And last of all, the NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS are the best NFL team ever…yes EVER! They went 16-0 in the regular season (1st team to go undefeated since the 16-game schedule). And in this era (of free agency and other factors) that’s unheard of. And now we’re just two weeks away from playing the wildcard NY Giants in the Super Bowl. They are highly favored and I know they’ll win. So absolutely nothing to worry about there. Not that I’d let that stuff really stress me out. But it’s just to show that it’s another thing that I shouldn’t be stressed about.

It’s just these little annoying events and incidences in my life that have me absolutely perplexed as to why I should be so stress. And it also got me to thinking why in general are we as a society so stress. I believe things would be so much easier if we all found things in our lives that could help us calm down and relax. There’s just too much out there working against us. But I for one am going to try, and I mean really really try to relax and calm down. I’m going to make sure that trivial things don’t effect me at all. As for bigger concerns, I will only allot a relatively small amount of concern and thought to penetrate my seemingly fragile world.

I don’t need any major stresses. I can honestly feel the change in my body and mind when I am stressed. And I can honestly say that it doesn’t feel good. So I’m going to make a change; a positive change in my life that in which I can grow from and hopefully and eventually completely eliminate all stress in my life so I can live a healthier more productive life.

What Ever Happened to Kindness? - The World of Less Innocence

There was once a time when virtues were praised in this society. I can remember growing up and being taught life lesson to be polite, nice, courteous, unselfish. I want to know what happened to kindness. Where did we get screwed up were these qualities are no longer admired? We live in a world where rudeness and bad behavior litter the domain of a once innocent existence. In this place, vices infect, dilute and undermine those now hollowed values that were once instinctively fought for. We look to drown ourselves in alcohol, partying constantly, and overdosing on any kind of drug we can find that will alter our feelings and ability to live. Choosing to “live for the now and not give a f#*!”. And if you’re not apart of these activities then you are shunned as an outcast. “Not cool”. “Lame”. “Boring”.

Nice guys finish last. You have to be an asshole. You’ve got to be rude, crude and obscene to get ahead. I have found that to be certainly true. You just can’t be nice, honest and polite and expect to be noticed and respected. It’s like people have to know that you can bitch them out in order to pay attention to you. They have to fear you to do what you ask. You just can’t ask. You must demand; command.

I was once asked what my vice was. And I honestly could not answer immediately. I don’t drink. I don’t smoke. I don’t do drugs. I believe in being loyal to your partner. I believe in telling the truth. The group of guys that asked me just started laughing and saying that I had to have something. Somehow these qualities are considered as being weak. That I can’t handle certain things just because I’m sober 24/7.

I wonder if we are swirling around the bottom of the bowl. Are we going to consistently degrade? Getting worse and worse. Will we ever realize that by doing what we do now we are only showing kids that this is the way they should act? And they will. Then, they teach there kids. And so on and so on. The same shit that plasters the walls will corrupt and break down the entire building.

Artistic Filmmaking: Art or Fart?

Why is it that so many young filmmakers feel the need to make an artistic film. First of all, isn’t the act of filmmaking art in itself. I could be wrong but that’s what I believe. Why is it that they feel their films need to be artistic and complex and so dynamic. Don’t get me wrong all that is great. And I love artistic films. Even though I don’t get most of them. And that’s the thing, most artistic films that I like are done by experienced filmmakers like Darren Aronofsky and Stanley Kubrick just to name a few. Art films can be great but they are difficult to make and even more difficult to get your point across. So why would someone so inexperienced attempt to make a film that is so much more difficult to produce. I feel that every time someone makes a film they must take their audience into consideration. Do they have a target audience? If so they really need to make the film so the audience can relate to it and that way understand and enjoy it more.

Second, what’s wrong with just making an entertaining film? Why does everything have to be so big, and artistic and Academy Award winning? What’s the big deal with that. I would say 90% of my favorite films are just ones that are flat out more entertaining than anything else. Now, in those there is some political/social commentary and visually/technically appealing ones as well. But for the most part they are films you can just sit down and enjoy. Anytime.

The answer to these questions is originality. People and filmmakers seem to believe that there are no original stories worth telling without making it artistic or having a complex story with millions of characters and thousands of plot twists (i.e. CRASH). Nothing can be straightforward storytelling anymore. It’s considered lazy and unoriginal. Therefore young filmmakers see the opportunity for making a mark by creating an artistic film. Personally I’d rather make, and see, something that I enjoy and deals with topics that I like and can relate to. For example, my favorite type of film is a zombie apocalypse film, even though they have spread into popularity quicker than a zombie outbreak itself. Seems like every year a dozen major/semi-major ones are being released. It would start to get old for me if they weren't so darn entertaining. As more are released they seem to become an archetype as if there is a blueprint for them that everyone is using. But I like them regardless. And most of those are straightforward, entertaining horror films that try to scare you and freak you out with gore. Most people don’t like that or can only take it in small dosages. I love it.

My point is I wish we could make movies without having to worry about whether it’s been done before or being artistic and just create something that people can sit down and be taken away from their world for two hours and just be entertained.

The Celtics are Back!

I’ve always been a huge fan of the Boston Celtics ever since I could remember. I grew up during the Bird era in Mansfield, Massachusetts. Unfortunately, the Celtics haven’t been much competition since Larry Bird left in 1992. They’ve had mild success with Paul Pierce, the current face of the franchise, and Antoine Walker in the late nineties and have only been to the playoffs six times since Bird’s departure. But, last year was one of their worst seasons ever which saw a franchise record 18-game losing streak. It was clear to everyone, including the Celtics’ director of basketball operations Danny Ainge, that a change was needed. And that’s exactly happened.

The trade for All-Star shooting guard Ray Allen immediately following this year’s NBA draft on June 28th was an attempt to change the trend of the previous three years to draft and build young players. Instead choosing to trade young talent and acquire valuable veteran players who can make an impact immediately. However, Allen wasn’t the only support for Paul Pierce Ainge was going to get.

On July 30th, the Celtics traded for Kevin Garnett, the All-Star power forward of the Minnesota Timberwolves, and one of my favorite players. The blockbuster deal sent a number of young soon to be stars to the T-Wolves including up and coming Al Jefferson. It was definitely a hefty price, but I can’t be happier. Garnett has consistently been one of the top players in the league for many years. Now with Ray Allen, who is one of the best long-range shooters in the league, and Paul Pierce, who shows no signs of stopping his brilliance in the organization, the Celtics are already contenders and one of the favorites in the Eastern Conference. And more importantly, these recent moves show me that the team does care about winning and getting back to the level of the once dominant Boston Celtics of previous years.

Film Review: GWOEMUL a.k.a THE HOST (2006) D: Joon-Ho Bong

First let me start out by saying the trailers and previews for this film were amazing when I saw them. I’ve been trying to see this film seen I saw the trailer three months ago. I got it the first day it came on DVD. Needless to say, I had high expectations.

Well, it let me down. Big time. I was really disappointed. Everything I’ve seen and been hearing about the film, even now after I’ve seen it, is how this is such a great “monster movie” and how it’s one of the best “horror films”. All that’s bull shit. First of all it’s not a “monster movie”. It’s a creature feature. Straight out of the fifties’ Big Bug movies and government experiments gone wrong. Just like GODZILLA. Another Asian creation. In fact it is incredibly similar to GODZILLA. I don’t understand why this particular film has been getting so much great publicity. Yes, there were great special effects. Yes, the mutation did look pretty cool.

The first time you see the mutation, when it’s just hanging there and all the people are looking at it talking about what it could be. Then, it moves suddenly and jumps in the water. The first thing it reminded me of was ALIEN. I got extremely excited. Unfortunately, that was the apex of my excitement for the whole film.

This film is an integration of a variety of genres that range from horror to comedy to fantasy to drama and so on. However, I personally like horror films to have a level of seriousness and sincerity to it otherwise it looses it’s appeal and can make it seem campy and silly. Thus, not gaining a maximum entertainment value based on fear and being scared. Which is the essence of a Horror film. This film fluctuates so much from that it’s hard to gage what emotion you as an audience member are trying to feel. For example, the funeral seen. First the name of the scene kind of tells you that it’s going to be serious and heart-felt. Guess again. Humorous. Distastefully so. I understand the difference between horror and comedy. And that if you can make someone laugh at a situation you can also make them get scared just as easily. That’s the beauty about blending comedy and horror. I just feel that it was not done well in THE HOST.

Another thing I notice with THE HOST, and with many Asian films, is a loss of translation. I don’t understand why in a lot of Asian films they turn to comedy to alleviate the tension in a scene instead of trying to take it to the next level. They bring it back down with comedy. It’s like that in some horror flick and just about any martial arts films and a bunch of action films as well. Let’s say they just need to stick to what kind of film they’re trying to make. If it’s a horror film you don’t want to make it silly. There were a number of scenes like that in THE HOST, and I just don’t understand why. I hate to be the ignorant American, but maybe it’s Asian-thing. There’s obviously a cultural difference. Maybe that applies a great deal to filmmaking.

I won’t mention much about all the anti-American undertones throughout the film. I’ll just say they’re definitely there. So don’t be offended. And honestly I had absolutely no problem with it. With all that being said. I did enjoy many parts of the film. Every creature scene is worth watching. I like the story of Park Gung-du and his daughter Hyun-seo. The containment/hospital scenes are cheesy and campy. And the whole story falls apart when the family disbands. The final battle scene is pretty good. That’s one of the scenes that has no humor and it was handled well. The score was often inappropriate. Overall I would recommend checking it out. After all, we all have different taste. I’m just a huge Horror movie fan and THE HOST it let me down.

Comic Review: Marvel's CIVIL WAR

Marvel’s CIVIL WAR comic review

This highly anticipated blockbuster event started off with a bang. Literally, with the villain known as NITRO, who has the ability to explode himself, blowing up a part of Stamford, Connecticut and killing over 600 people, including 200 children who were at school. The reason for Nitro’s action were due to a raid by the superhero group known as the NEW WARRIORS. After the event, citizens urge for there to be something done to people with supernatural powers. Congress passed the superhero registration act which would force metahumans to register with the government, reveal their identity and join a task force or... be arrested. Some heroes, like IRON MAN, agreed with the registration act seeing it has a natural evolution for the role of superheroes in today’s society. Others, like CAPTAIN AMERICA, opposed the registration act and felt it went against people’s rights as American citizens. Thus a war began. Those who are for the act. And those who oppose it.

As a whole the event was pretty good. It had some great moments (new Spidey suit, Spidey unmasking, Thor’s clone killing Goliath, Cap vs. Shellhead). However, it lost something towards the end. Marvel built the event up so much that by the end the events that transpired didn’t meet expectations, especially after delays and an over abundance of tie-ins. The conclusion was lackluster and overshadowed by the death of Captain America in the following issue (number 25) of his series after the event had already ended.

Not to mention that Iron Man, my favorite character, was turned into a villain by an overwhelming support against him and his pro-registration views.

Overall, CIVIL WAR was entertaining but I can’t help but believe that much motive for the series was based singularly on selling comics rather than making the best stories, which Marvel has always prided it's self on.

Film Review: 300

Film Review: 300 (2007) D: Zach Synder

300 was one of the best films I’ve seen in theaters…ever. It was great. The most visually stunning movie I’ve ever seen. Some of the best visual and special effects. Spectacular cinematography. I believe this film has created a new style of filmmaking, and I believe people will be seeing more films made as this one was, digitally on a soundstage in front of a green screen. Zach Synder upped his game following the 2004 release of DAWN OF THE DEAD (remake). He is quickly becoming one of my favorite directors. He’s not afraid to make a film gory and keeps a story flowing, action packed and interesting. I found the acting to be terrific with stand out performances from Lena Headey (Queen Gorgo), Michael Fassbender (Stelios) and of course Gerard Butler (King Leonidas) whom I remember as Dracula in DRACULA 2000.

This film was based on a graphic novel by Frank Millar (Sin City, Daredevil, Batman). It matched it almost perfectly. Probably the best adaptation from comic book to film. Miller’s great art was seen in motion as if he himself had drawn each frame of film.

Overall, 300 will probably become one of my favorite films for a long time.

THE DESCENT review

I found THE DESCENT to be a pretty good horror flick. I enjoyed it. It sucked me in and I cared about most of the characters. The cinematography was excellent and the score was terrific. The acting was fairly good. I felt the director, Neil Marshall (DOG SOLDIERS) did a great job. The gore throughout was a real treat for any gorehound.

I do have a couple of problems with it though. First, I would have liked to see at least one male character with the group so I could relate more closely. However, I believe that was done for a reason. This is a story of a group of women seeking adventure and at the same time dealing with the incident of Sarah’s husband and daughter’s death. So, I could live with that. The other thing that I didn’t like was how Juno was treated. She definitely did not deserve what she got. She had nothing but the best of intentions for the group. Even though she had an affair with Paul, Sarah’s husband, she was trying to make up for it by exploring an uncharted cave system and name it after Sarah. Killing Beth was clearly an accident. I don’t know why that was made into a big deal other than to supplement the conflict between Juno and Sarah and set up the ending. I mean Juno was freaking out and full of adrenaline and was merely reacting when she stabbed Beth with a rock climber’s ax. As for leaving Beth, that was pretty shitty but what could Juno really do other than put her out of her misery. Maybe that was too much for Juno so she just left. Understandable. I wouldn’t have done it. But it’s understandable. So from that Sarah injures Juno and leaves her for dead to be attacked by incoming crawlers. I mean that’s cruel. It’s kind of smart to leave her as bait so she could escape but DAMN!! That’s inhumane.

Overall I thought it was really good. Better than what I expected. I would recommend it to horror fans.

Entry #3: PLANET HULK

Planet Hulk

I’m currently reading INCREDIBLE HULK volume 2 (current volume). But in particularly the 14 part story of PLANET HULK. It’s absolutely fantastic. I love it. Some of the best stuff I’ve read in comics yet. Greg Pak is the writer. It is well written and has a terrific story. I’ll have to check out some of his other stuff. But for now I’m going to continue to enjoy reading PLANET HULK for another six issues.

Entry #2: No good deed goes undone.

I just watched the film HARD CANDY. Artistically it was good. Good story; good cinematography. Really an overall good film. And I’m pleased that the director (David Slade) is going to direct the upcoming film 30 DAYS OF NIGHT, that is based of a graphic novel series by Steve Niles (one of my favorite writers). But, how the film played out made me a little angry.

***SPOILER***

The girl in the film ends up convincing the guy to kill himself because he’s done all of these dirty deeds. But the things this girl does…I’m mean damn, it’s some crazy shit. And she’s definitely more than a little fucked up. And she’s only fourteen! Now don’t get me wrong the guy deserved it. I’m mean he’s a pedophile and takes pictures of young teenage girls. I’m glad something was done to him, and I appreciate some one standing up for young girls that are preyed upon by those sick individuals. But, the girl also deserves some kind of punishment for what she’s done. She’s almost as twisted and deranged as he was. I felt I sympathized with the guy more than the girl. Now maybe that had something to do with me not seeing the first 15-20 minutes of the film. But, still. If this was a horror film she would have died too. Because in horror films no good deed goes undone.

Listen up dead heads,

This is the first entry in what I hope will become a popular place for people to visit and read about random stuff.

Some of the things I will be writing about will be: movies, music, comics, video games, the film industry, 'things that go bump in the night', sports (specifically the New England Patriots, Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics, Boston Bruins and the Boston College Eagles), and a personal journal where I'll write about whatever is on my mind at the time.
